I hung a large piece of paper on the wall of our journalism class to generate fresh ideas for articles. On it I asked my fellow journalists to tell me what frustrated, confused or scared them about Jeffersontown High School.
”I hate how this school has more cameras than a county lock-up.” - Maxwell Overstreet
Okay, Max, listen to me. As excessive as it is, in a public high school cameras are necessary for the students’ protection. We are very violent and non-domesticated teenagers that need protection from ourselves.
Actually, I think that this school does not have enough cameras. We have too many blind spots where we could be soliciting drugs or jumping the freshmen. I think that the largest most dangerous blind spots are in the school restrooms. I am going to come out and say it. We need cameras in the restrooms. For all the assistant principals know we could be doing grotesque things in the restrooms like smoking so we need cameras in the stalls to protect us from ourselves. So all I am saying is we need at least 20 or 30 more cameras at this school, you know nothing too crazy, and we need to hire at least 2 more security guards to watch them all. I will feel safe when the school raises the bar on Charger safety.
Hey, Max, just ask yourself one question, what would happen if you were sexually harassed in the hallway and there were no cameras to see what happened. No one would have proof.
”Regardless of all the cameras, they still will not help us get out of a fight until reaction times are beefed up.” - Maxwell Overstreet
That’s an issue for another article!

I agree with the point the that the cameras help with our safety but having cameras in bathrooms is going a bit overboard. I mean we have many cameras around the school and plus a camera outside the bathoom to tell who is entering and exiting the bathrooms. It’s like violating students’ privacy. So I support your idea that cameras are good but I don’t think we need them in the bathrooms. thank you…and good job.

I agree with what you wrote for the most part but i don’t think cameras in the stalls would actually solve anything. i think it would make it awkward and i would feel violated but maybe in the bathroom by the sinks would be straight. But like i said, cameras are a good thing and i do support them

More cameras? Are you kidding me? They are already in every hallway. Cameras in the bathroom is doing a little too much and is invasion of privacy. Literally. I dont like the idea of being watched when I use the restroom. How would you feel if they had cameras in dressing rooms? Don’t say it’s different because it’s not. Either way you are exposed. If anything security guards can make extra rounds. And “check in” on the bathrooms. However our school couold use 2 more security guards. Perhaps women.

Courtney, I agree. Cameras in the bathroom is going too far!!! Devin was using it sarcastically as an example of the absurd. He doesn’t really think it’s a good idea either.

Yeah, it’s a great protection for the students from harassments but I believe it is necessary to put some cameras in the restroom but I believe there are already enough in the hallways. Don’t forget that there are also teachers in hallways that serves same as a security camera.

In my opinion, cameras are not going to save you from the inevitable beat down you may or may not get from your peers. If we had more security guards our school would be fine. My Freshman and Sophomore years we didn’t have that problem, because we had more than three.
Not that I feel threatened here, but it may keep someone who bit of a little more than they could chew from getting pummeled.

if we did have cameras in bathrooms i think that people would be way more out there about stuff.like if they smoke they would blow smoke into the cameras just to mess with people.but i dont use the restrooms so it doesnt matter to me

I agree with you on the needing more cameras but I agree with Courtney about having cameras in the bathroom is too far. If the school is worried about what goes on in the bathroom then they need a trust worthy adult to stay outside of the bathroom. that way they’re not in everyone’s privacy and if something happens they are the first ones there.

Cameras in bathrooms are a bad thing. There are already too many cameras in J’town. They don’t stop anything from happening. Just put some vents in the bathroom instead beacause since you can’t prevent what goes down, which I’m thinking is why we’re talking about bathroom cameras, why not make it less bothersome.?

i agree with Courtney , cameras in the bathroom is taking it way too far

We don’t need more cameras. It is our responsibility to do the right thing. We don’t need to know that we’re being watched every second of every day. Give us freedom and you’ll see that the majority of people choose to do the right thing.

I think that adding cameras in the bathrooms is a very unnecessary use of money for the school. People need privacy… Some people would actually become paranoid knowing that they are monitored in the bathroom. I would probably be, as that is a rather unwillingly chance to take, knowing someone is watching you.
