There was a place at the school that seniors could get away from underclassmen and have lunch in peace, a place where they could sit out on a nice day, a place where they wouldn’t be disturbed. But for the past two years freshmen, sophomore and juniors have been trickling in and ruining the whole purpose of The Senior Courtyard.
Ever since freshmen year the class of 2010 has been waiting for their chance to sit in the Senior Courtyard, just like the seniors before them. The first time you step out there you think that you’ll have a relaxing time without the nuisance and immaturity of the underclassmen. But you’ll soon find out that it’s just like the rest of the school and you’ll have to fight your way for a table with your friends or be stuck sitting with non-seniors.
It may be that the new administrators and security guards don’t know about the senior courtyard but it’s kind of hard to miss the “Seniors Only” sign on the door leading out to the seating area or it may be that they just don’t care and have more important things to deal with, but to the seniors that have waited patiently it is a huge deal. Would it really be so hard to have someone monitoring the courtyard? Even if it means just having someone sitting by the door to only allow seniors?
Yeah, the freshmen may want to sit outside and be cool in school, but it takes away the privilege of being a senior and just causes problems. So please, teachers and staff, make sure the people who are out in the courtyard deserve to be there; it’s one of the few things that the seniors have left.

I agree, it becomes too crowded outside and not even worth it!!

I added your blog to bookmarks. And i’ll read your articles more often!

I will alert the assistant principals that they need to be aware that it is a senior courtyard and only seniors are able to use that privelage. I will make sure that this rule is enforced.

Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I agree also, like seriously it irritates me. Especially when in past years, I couldn’t look at the door the wrong way with out someone calling me out about being an underclassmen. This is an issue…
October 21st, 2009 at 5:46 am
Yes! That’s right Mr. Pollio. Last year when I was there everyone attended the senior courtyard
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 am
and i hope that when im a senior in basicly two years it will only be seniors sitting with me so i have something important to look forward to,.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Not going to lie, I’ve always been able to sit out in the courtyard, even as a freshman. The seniors in my Freshman and Sophomore years didn’t care, mainly because they needed people to play hackey sack or toss the Frisbee around with.
To me the Senior Courtyard is kind of symbolic. It’s almost like territory that the seniors run. You’re welcome to come on these lands, but remember who really runs it. The Seniors. Do anything to tamper with it like throwing your trash down on the lawn or mess with the picnic tables…It’s not going to be pretty.
October 28th, 2009 at 7:38 am
actually i fully agree with max, the seniors run it but everyone should be able to go if they want to. i didnt go very much my freshman year, but ive been alot my sophmore year and theres really only maybe three seniors at a time in there. so whats the point in not letting anyone, even the harmless hackey sackers, go in because the seniors when they barely go anyways?
November 11th, 2009 at 6:26 am
its not that big of a deal half the seniors out there have been senoirs since last year and they will probably be seniors next year and when they were under class men they still went out there
November 11th, 2009 at 6:27 am
I agree with Max and Mackenzie.
November 11th, 2009 at 6:29 am
ok like why is it such a big deal and all underclassmen arent immature. It doesnt look like anyone is bothered by it at 3rd lunch. everyone is eating in peace. i agree with mackenzie!
November 11th, 2009 at 7:04 am
This article is right! WE seniors need our own place to sit. That’s why its called “SENIOR COURTYARD” not freshmen or juinor.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:05 am
3rd lunch is relaxing and fun in the courtyard, unlike inside the cafe’
November 11th, 2009 at 7:06 am
I agree with Mackenzie, but then again, what privilages do the seniors actually recieve? It’s upsetting when the courtyard has been given the official name, “SENIOR COURT YARD,” for years. It especially bothers me when there actually are immature underclassmen out there. Some underclassman are standable, and actually, some of them you cannot even tell are younger.. But, the ones that obviously have no common sense, and disrupt my lunch time, tend to tick me off.. And when people sit at the table that we sit at, every single day. To me, it is a big deal.. Going to this high school for four years, each year dealing with more underclassman, and also each year the majority of them are more rowdy than the previous year.. We, as seniors do need some privilages, other than black shirts on fridays, and a senior court yard that well, does not live up to it’s name.. That just doesn’t cut it with me.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:08 am
class of 2010 is the best period
November 11th, 2009 at 7:12 am
maybe seniors just need different privileges instead of just a courtyard..i dont really care about freshman being out there just need more seats out there for when we have more people who want to sit out there instead of a couple tables and a broken wooden table..
November 11th, 2009 at 7:18 am
seniors should be diffrent from the underclass men by having special rights.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:20 am
I totally agree. I don’t even sit out there anymore. They really need to stop.
Mr. Pollio- whatever you told the APs obviously is not working. It’s been a month and nothing has changed. It may even be worse. They really don’t watch out for the underclassmen though they stand right by the door. Thanks for trying though.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:55 am
The Senior Courtyard is a really great place to get away from annoying underclassmen, but they are coming out there now which isnt fair because we have been waiting along time for our turn.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:00 am
this is not the only thing… yea it is big because its the senior courtyard 4 a reason but also all senior privileges have been revoked we honestly have no privileges. . .
November 11th, 2009 at 8:12 am
I co-op so i don’t actually go to the senior courtyard but i did notice last year there were a lot of other people out there besides senoirs.
As a senior i believe that the class of 2010 should be able to have that privilege now that we don’t have what the seniors had 2 years ago.
November 11th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
It’s stupid to complain about this. It’s not that important. Most people don’t go out there anyway and under classmen aren’t immature.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
I agree with Erin. the senior courtyar is for seniors ONLY. I have seen wayyy to many underclassmen there. I know they want to go but the seniors now have to wait so you can wait your turn too. It’s only fair.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
You Seniors know for a fact that you went out to the senior courtyard when you were an underclassman. Its not that big of a deal! If you dont like the immature underclassman out there than drag an AP out there and get ‘em out of there. I have been out there once or twice and not one person had a problem with me out there I had several people sitting with me and giving me hugs. But some underclassman do wear senior shirts just so they can enjoy eating there lunch in the sun without the Crazy loudness from the cafeiteria.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:28 am
I agree with all the senoirs because it is some many under classmen out there i don’t even go out there anymore its just like seating in the lunchroom all over again..
November 16th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Ok, underclassmen are VERY immature. Not because Iam a senior and can say that, but because they act like they are still very much middle schoolers. However, I do believe that the few underclassmen( and I mean very few) that throw away their junk and are grown up beyond their years should get some kind of recognition too. Just dont diminish our right that we have waited 4 years for.
November 20th, 2009 at 5:55 am
i dont understand why only 12th graders can go out , i mean yes i understand there are some underclassmen that are not grown up enough to go outside, but there are some 10th and 11th graders that are grown up enough to go out , i think it isnt fair that only 12th graders can
November 20th, 2009 at 6:27 am
you seniors are trying to complain like you never went ot in the courtyard when you were an underclassmen thats really hypocritical if you want to complain about it so just stop your complaining
November 20th, 2009 at 7:01 am
wow, really, i cant believe that seniors of all people are talking about being immature. If you ask me the seniors are the most immature out of all the grade levels because their so darn happy to be graduating that they act like idiots. Also if seniors really wanted to keep underclassmen out they could easily do so, the simple fact is that most underclassmen are invited by a senior to join the senior courtyard, so do me a favor and shut up and stop blaming us.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:18 am
Sadly, you ‘Seniors’ dont do much to differentiate yourselves from the ‘underclassmen’, Im a Junior and hang out at the Senior Courtyard, I dont act immature in all honesty. I sit out there, talk with some friends, eat my lunch and leave. Point out the immaturity in that.
Honestly, you need to stomach what even us underclassmen have to suffer from ‘certain’ other students in terms of immaturity and nuisance.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:43 am
Not true Liz. I have never gone out to the court yard until this year.
Also its meant for seniors. Also maybe you don’t act like an underclassman.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:47 am
Um.. i dont think its a big deal.. if you dont like Underclassmen out there when you are, just dont go out there.. problem solved.. Mr Pollio…i respectfully disagree.. its crowded and loud inside the cafe so i wish somebody would say something to me if i go out there…
November 20th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Theres ME!!!!!!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:54 am
No, not all the kids i the picture are seniors. BUT maybe if the staff were smart enough to check our school ID’s thats we use for nothing except checking out books, which half of the student body doesn’t do. Maybe giving our ID’s a purpose will help out on this MINOR issue.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:00 am
I DONT LIKE OUR SENIORS
November 20th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
senoirs arent alone in the courtyard
November 22nd, 2009 at 8:33 am
I understand your dissapointment and frustration this year not being able to have the courtyard to yourself free of underclassmen. But to think that this problem is going to go away especially quick is not going to happen. You stated a very good point that administraters are not worried about it and your right they’re not. They’re too worried about what’s going on in the lunchroom that day and if a possible fight will break out. Also to think that just by having someone sit at the door and make sure people are actually seniors in order to go to the courtyard actually sounds more difficult than it’s worth. I mean what are you going to do i.d. people to go sit the courtyard? If not resorting to that and just going on what they say and if they look like they’re actual seniors, many underclassmen look years older than the actual seniors in some cases. Hope the problem starts getting better but i honestly dont see such a easy solution to this problem.
November 24th, 2009 at 6:59 am
i was one of the few sitting as a junoir with seniors.
November 24th, 2009 at 8:29 am
some underclassmen arent immature but reguardless its a SENIOR courtyard. and no i never went out there when i was an underclassmen i thought it was cool for the seniors to have a place to get away, so i didnt mess with it. wait your turn, underclassmen just dont want to think of themselves as immature, some may not be, but still.
November 24th, 2009 at 8:54 am
The Senior Courtyard is just that: a place for SENIORS to eat lunch. Underclassmen have no place within its boundaries because they have not achieved as much as the seniors and do not deserve the right to eat outside. All of the underclassmen will be seniors at some point (most of them, anyway) and they should just have to wait like we did. To the people that say “Oh, I’ve been going into the courtyard since I was a freshman, it’s not a big deal:” of course it’s not going to be a big deal. You have cheapened the honor of having a place just for seniors by diluting it with your delinquent presence. You should have been barred from entering the cortyard in the first place.
To Saint: What you’re saying is like saying if it’s hot in your house, you should move instead of turing down the temperature. You have the complete opposite idea of what is supposed to go on in the SENIOR Courtyard. If I don’t like underclassmen in the courtyard, they need to leave, not the other way around.
November 27th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
This is one of those topics that can be debated about for years. When it’s down to the simple fact that it is the Senior Court Yard. Not just outside where all the “cool” and “laid back” under class men can go because they don’t like the noise of their fellow under class men in the main cafeteria. Just suck it up and you’ll get to sit out there like big kids one day.
December 5th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
You can not mean to tell me that anyone can consider that a court yard? I mean look at it with its 4 or 5 picnic tables and worn out grass. Next year I will be a senior and with the way it looks I will not be proud to call it the “senior court yard” nor would i care if underclassmen sat out there. I have several senior friends and one of them who happens to be in my lunch, invited me to sit with her. What’s wrong with that? If it means that much to you, then raise some money and fix up the place. Buy a gazebo, a fountain, plant some flowers. It’s not really that special. It would be a huge waste of time for APs to check who goes out there. It’s not that serious. You guys are being really possesive like sitting in that patch of grass you call a courtyard is really a privelige.
January 7th, 2010 at 8:50 am
underclassmen are just jealous cause the seniors are freaking beast.
January 12th, 2010 at 10:19 am
I dont understand why the seniors complain, because everytime I look outside during lunch, I never see seniors sitting out there. So stop complaining!
January 12th, 2010 at 10:22 am
DONT NOBODY CARE BECAUE AT THE END OF THE DAY IF I FEEL I WANNA SIT OUT THERE THATS WHAT I WILL BE DOING
January 12th, 2010 at 10:29 am
wow
January 12th, 2010 at 11:11 am
I think that both Seniors and Juniors should be allowed to go out into the Senior Courtyard.
January 12th, 2010 at 11:14 am
I agree I’m not a senior yet but I know that when I become one that I don’t want no freshmen sophmores or juiors going into place that they haven’t deserved yet. I think that the senior courtyard is a privilage that you have to earn and not something that you just get! seniors should have their “senior” time.
January 12th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
lmao @ ty in the courtyard though he clearly is a second year freshman
January 14th, 2010 at 6:14 am
mayne i never sit outside anyways… it stays being to hot or to cold out there…
January 14th, 2010 at 9:03 am
Don’t go outside then.
January 21st, 2010 at 6:03 am
Erin; this can be a problem. But I have had seniors repeadetly invite me into the senior courtyard. So it’s not just underclassmen getting in there. They are being taken in there by seniors.
January 21st, 2010 at 6:09 am
Seniors complain too much! Chill out, It is just some tables outside.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:08 am
I love how the seniors act like they never went out there before now. i didnt go my freshman year, but i have been my sophomore year. its not a big deal. like mackenzie said theres like three seniors out there in third lunch.
So .. (:
