As Louisvillians are coming out of the longest sustained period of frigid winter weather in decades, we are reminded that the uncharacteristically cold weather of January presented dangers along with beautiful snowscapes and a day off school. Outside Atlanta, Georgia, Jacob Bullock, 15, and his 14-year-old cousin Marvin Mathurin died when they both fell through the ice on a frozen pond. They were not alone near the pond, because Alex Paul a 15-year- old friend stayed with them at the time. He fell through the ice with the two other boys but was the only one able to climb back out. He proceeded to call 911 and wait until firefighters and police arrived at the area.
During this time firefighters and medical teams arrived at the scene and coaxed Alex to land to treat him for his hypothermia. Then divers from the Hall County Sheriff Department went into the water to find the two other boys who never reached the surface of the water. After one hour of searching, the divers found the bodies of both Jacob and Marvin and began CPR. Authorities pronounced both Jacob and Marvin dead at Gwinnett Medical Hospital in Atlanta.
Paul was treated and released from the hospital late Saturday night after a physical checkout and an X-ray scan. The community of Gwinnett County mourned the deaths of both Jacob and Marvin and held a funeral service at Northview Christian Church in Buford County. Neighbors in Gwinnett County told the 11Alive News that an email has been sent out to parents and children advising them to keep children off of frozen ice or ponds.
