Yu-Na Kim performs in the Short Program in Pacific Coliseum

Nineteen-year-old Queen of Ice Yu-Na Kim made ladies figure skating history in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics,  her first Olympics. She made the  highest score ever in ladies figure skating history.

On February 23, 2010,  the Short Program started in the Pacific Coliseum. Yu-Na Kim performed her program after Asada Mao who used to be her rival. She performed to music from a James Bond medley. Yu-Na Kim ranked first place with 78.50. The gap between her score and Asada Mao who was in second place was 4.72, a  huge gap in figure skating. Newspapers and TV media praised Yu-Na Kim and everybody recognized her as Queen of Ice.

Two days later the Free Skating that followed the Short Program started. Yu-Na performed to music entitled “Concerto in F” by George Gershwin. This time, she got her title ‘Queen Yu-Na’. The skater earned a score of 150.06 and won the gold medal. Her Final score was 228.56 which was the highest score ever in ladies figure skating history. Asada Mao won the silver medal with 205.50 score.

Yu-Na Kim surprised the world. The world said that this 228.56 score will be an unbreakable score for a long time. Michelle Kwan who is called legend of ladies figure skating because she won five times in the world championship series was on the scene to congratulate Yu-Na Kim.

However, unfortunately, she is considering retirement. She has gotten lots of pressure by Korean citizens and has earned a lot of money. Yet nobody knows what she will do. If she keeps her skater life, she could make more history in figure skating. Even if she retires, the world will remember her for a long time.

Enjoy her performance (Vancouver 2010 Olympic ladies free skating program)

Junior Lenette Holt had 18 points and 9 rebounds in Monday’s game against Ballard. Even though she was one of the game’s leading figures, Holt remains modest.  It feels good,” said Holt, who hit 8 of 11 shots and 2 of 2 free throws. “We’re in the final four now, and that’s just a blessing. It seems like a dream. It was nice to win district, but this is better.”

The lady Chargers’ coach was also happy to see the team get their twentieth  win. “This is special because we weren’t even ranked among the top 10 in the region in the preseason. We used that as a motivator.”

The Lady Chargers (20-8) advance to face Mercy in Thursday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.

The Lady Chargers celebrate a district championship

Our Lady Chargers took charge as they started off with a 26-13 lead in the middle of the second quarter. Cami Calderon’s second three-pointer put the team into a 40-38 lead with thirty-three seconds left on the clock in the third quarter.

Coach Kyser says, “We were very lucky to win; CAL has a great team. They’re already in regionals. I’m very proud of the ladies. They worked hard.” Lenette Holt and Cami Calderon led J-Town and Aisjah Roan had great defense.

“Our triangle play came in well with defending the best players on the opposing team, and Brittany Dawson did well at it. Chasity and Cami did well chasing who they had to,” Coach Kyser explained.  Our Chargers are playing their hearts out and they are in it to win it. They don’t give up; they just play harder.

Apolo Ohno won Bronze medal in short track (Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic)

905    Apolo Ohno is an American short track speed skating competitor. In the Winter Olympics, he won seven medals (two gold, two silver, three bronze). With his seventh medal in short track, he became the most decorated American Winter Olympic athlete of all time.

He has won the men’s national title a total of twelve times. He was the United States Olympic Committee’s Male Athlete of the Month in October 2003 and March 2008. He was named the U.S. Speedskating’s Athlete of the Year for 2003 and was a 2002, 2003 and 2006 finalist for the Sullivan Award, which recognizes the best amateur athlete in the United States.

     In Vancouver Winter Olympic 2010, Ohno is competing in the 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m and the 5000 m relay races.

In the 1500 m final, Ohno placed second after two Korean skaters, Lee Ho-Suk and Sung Si-Bak made contact and crashed into the wall during the final turn of the final lap. He was in fourth place leading into the crash, and as a result, moved into second place, earning the silver. Fellow American skater, J. R. Celski finished with the bronze medal. The gold medal went to South Korea’s Lee Jung-Su. This win allowed Ohno, with six career medals, to tie Bonnie Blair for most medals won by a U.S. Winter Olympian.

Heading into the 1000 m final, Ohno had won the overall silver medal for the 1000 m during the 2009–10 World Cup by competing in three of the four competitions during the season. During the finals of the 1000 m, Ohno finished in third place, making a comeback from a slip with less than three laps remaining. With the bronze medal win, Ohno became the most decorated American athlete ever at the Winter Games with seven career medals.

J-town Beats Rival Eastern High

Posted on 02 February 2010 by Juanisha Crosson

“How you want it?? Show us our opponent!!”

-Lil Wayne

On Friday, January 29,  J-town dominated the Eagles’ gym with a final score of 67-60 against Eastern High School. Richard Kennedy scored 19 points in the game including a few 3 pointers. He commented, “We came together in the stretch and made big plays.”

Coach Jeff Morrow agreed and had this to say about Richard’s performance, “He had a lot of big plays and hit many important free throws.” Thomas Jackson who made 13 points really showed his determination in the game. Daniel Ross also did his thing scoring 12 points and a high 10 rebounds. He really had his head in the game. “Daniel played well and rebounded the ball well with a lot of energy,” explained Coach Morrow. Our team is really coming together this year and looking forward to winning all the games ahead.

“We played good and really hard; our intensity wasn’t up in the 4th quarter but toward the end it got up and that’s how we won.” commented Coach Daniel Hawkins. Both coaches feel the whole team contributed to winning this game. Our fans were there to cheer us on also. Some were painted from head to toe with love for our Chargers. Eastern may have had more fans in attendance on their home court, but J-town had more spirit and love in the air. Chargers keep up the good work!!

Wrestling: The Next State Champs

Posted on 25 January 2010 by Juanisha Crosson

jtown-wrestlers-002

Jeffersontown wrestling team is the new talk of the school. The team is preparing to go to state, working hard and staying focused on the goal they are trying to obtain. The team is full of hardworking individuals, some that have been interested from freshman year. The seniors have stepped up their game and are prepared to make this their most memorable year.

The team is looking forward to this year’s games and championship. Yusuf Mamedov has been having his eyes on the prize since he started wrestling. With his 19-8 record he can’t wait until they get to state. “Can’t wait to wrestle at 103 pounds at state tournament and be state champ,” says Yusuf with a look of determination on his face.

The seniors are looking forward to dominating their senior year also. TeAndre Taylor who weighs 112 has had his best year so far. The record he pulls is 24-1; losing only 1 match he still keeps his head up high and his eyes on destroying his competition.

“We are doing better, with a better attitude and I’m looking forward to getting a scholarship to Lindsey Wilson.” Nicu Alexandru states, “I could have done better and I’m looking forward to placing high at state.” Nicu has a record of 12-2 and he’s still striving to be the best.

Dair Sharlpov weighs a strong 145 and feels just as strong about his time as a wrestler. “I feel really good about this season and the team went far since seniors have stepped up as captains. We are sure to make some noise at state.” Torian Jewell who weighs in at 160 pounds has had a pretty rough record; but he still keeps his head high and has a positive attitude for the team. Coach Golladay says, “He has come a long way since freshman year and he’s worked really hard.”

The coaches are trying their best to make champions out of the team. They have had a great start so far and continue to achieve their goal. They finished 3rd in Capital City Dual in Franklin County, tied for 1st at Rumble in The Hive at Central High School and they are looking forward to being 1st at state and becoming those champions we know they are.

“Just keep plugging away and trying to turn out some state champs.” says the coach.

SOCCER OF THE WORLD

Posted on 20 January 2010 by Humberto Rosas

Barcelona’s Xavi Hernandez has been voted the best ‘creator’ of the world game of 2009, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) in a classification that has overtaken his teammate Leo Messi. Egarense midfielder won the classification by a single vote (164-163) Leo Messi, the Argentine who this season has won the ‘Golden Ball’ and the FIFA World Player came in second. Xavi Hernandez, who has already received this same award in 2008, will collect the award in London on February 1. According to the IFFHS, the award has been achieved through “his (Hernandez’s) way of playing smart.” The award received by Xavi Hernandez, best player in the last European Championship and third in voting for the FIFA World Player, is a reflection of the success of Barca this season, since the set was chosen best team in 2009 and Josep Guardiola awarded the best coach last year.
