Lady Chargers Beat Ballard with the Help of Holt

Junior Lenette Holt had 18 points and 9 rebounds in Monday’s game against Ballard. Even though she was one of the game’s leading figures, Holt remains modest.  It feels good,” said Holt, who hit 8 of 11 shots and 2 of 2 free throws. “We’re in the final four now, and that’s just a blessing. It seems like a dream. It was nice to win district, but this is better.”

The lady Chargers’ coach was also happy to see the team get their twentieth  win. “This is special because we weren’t even ranked among the top 10 in the region in the preseason. We used that as a motivator.”

The Lady Chargers (20-8) advance to face Mercy in Thursday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.

J-town Beats Rival Eastern High

Posted on 02 February 2010 by Juanisha Crosson

“How you want it?? Show us our opponent!!”

-Lil Wayne

On Friday, January 29,  J-town dominated the Eagles’ gym with a final score of 67-60 against Eastern High School. Richard Kennedy scored 19 points in the game including a few 3 pointers. He commented, “We came together in the stretch and made big plays.”

Coach Jeff Morrow agreed and had this to say about Richard’s performance, “He had a lot of big plays and hit many important free throws.” Thomas Jackson who made 13 points really showed his determination in the game. Daniel Ross also did his thing scoring 12 points and a high 10 rebounds. He really had his head in the game. “Daniel played well and rebounded the ball well with a lot of energy,” explained Coach Morrow. Our team is really coming together this year and looking forward to winning all the games ahead.

“We played good and really hard; our intensity wasn’t up in the 4th quarter but toward the end it got up and that’s how we won.” commented Coach Daniel Hawkins. Both coaches feel the whole team contributed to winning this game. Our fans were there to cheer us on also. Some were painted from head to toe with love for our Chargers. Eastern may have had more fans in attendance on their home court, but J-town had more spirit and love in the air. Chargers keep up the good work!!

Wrestling: The Next State Champs

Posted on 25 January 2010 by Juanisha Crosson

jtown-wrestlers-002

Jeffersontown wrestling team is the new talk of the school. The team is preparing to go to state, working hard and staying focused on the goal they are trying to obtain. The team is full of hardworking individuals, some that have been interested from freshman year. The seniors have stepped up their game and are prepared to make this their most memorable year.

The team is looking forward to this year’s games and championship. Yusuf Mamedov has been having his eyes on the prize since he started wrestling. With his 19-8 record he can’t wait until they get to state. “Can’t wait to wrestle at 103 pounds at state tournament and be state champ,” says Yusuf with a look of determination on his face.

The seniors are looking forward to dominating their senior year also. TeAndre Taylor who weighs 112 has had his best year so far. The record he pulls is 24-1; losing only 1 match he still keeps his head up high and his eyes on destroying his competition.

“We are doing better, with a better attitude and I’m looking forward to getting a scholarship to Lindsey Wilson.” Nicu Alexandru states, “I could have done better and I’m looking forward to placing high at state.” Nicu has a record of 12-2 and he’s still striving to be the best.

Dair Sharlpov weighs a strong 145 and feels just as strong about his time as a wrestler. “I feel really good about this season and the team went far since seniors have stepped up as captains. We are sure to make some noise at state.” Torian Jewell who weighs in at 160 pounds has had a pretty rough record; but he still keeps his head high and has a positive attitude for the team. Coach Golladay says, “He has come a long way since freshman year and he’s worked really hard.”

The coaches are trying their best to make champions out of the team. They have had a great start so far and continue to achieve their goal. They finished 3rd in Capital City Dual in Franklin County, tied for 1st at Rumble in The Hive at Central High School and they are looking forward to being 1st at state and becoming those champions we know they are.

“Just keep plugging away and trying to turn out some state champs.” says the coach.

SOCCER TEAM MAKES HISTORY

Posted on 15 October 2009 by Humberto Rosas

BOYS' SOCCER TEAM

BOYS' SOCCER TEAM

The boys’ soccer team is making history this season. They are ranked fourth in the region and ninth in the state when it comes to scoring (53 goals). They have won more than half of the games that they have played. Ebrima Cham has helped the team a lot; he has scored nineteen goals so far this season and  his speed has helped him score because he can easily over run the opponents. The new coach Rico Bulaclac is very proud of the soccer team because since 2005 they haven’t won more than one game  per season. The upcoming games for the soccer team are as follows:
St Francis (away) Sept. 28 (6-2)
Whitefield Academy (away) Oct. 1 (4-1)
Fern creek (home) Oct.6 cancellled
Southern (away) Oct 8 cancelled

Cross Country

Posted on 08 October 2009 by Kayla Stanfield

Tabitha running in her meet. The cross country team  kicked off their season on September 12th.  Their first meet was called Rumble through the Jungle. After the meet, I interviewed team member Tabitha Haist. Tabitha came to J-Town last year after attending South Oldham High, where she also ran cross country her freshman and sophomore years.

What grade are you in?

I’m a senior.

What is Cross Country in your own definition?

Cross Country is running long distance in a rough course.

How long have you been on the team?

I have been on J-town’s Cross Country team since my junior year.

How do you prepare for a meet?

I try to stay in shape, and stay hydrated when I’m running. I try to warm up by jogging around and stretching before my meet begins.

What or who inspires you?

I have to say my dad inspires me the most. He helps me train when I need to. My coach also inspires me. He’s there pushing my teammates and me throughout the race and making sure we practice everyday.

How do you train?

I practice everyday, I workout a lot and stretch. RUN RUN RUN!!

How has your coach helped you this year?

He is really helpful. He gives us lots of tips and pushes us everyday to do better.

Does the heat affect you while running?
Yes, the sun drains my energy when I’m running. It’s better for me to run when it’s cooler. I think the best time to run is in the morning or late afternoon.

How do you think this year will be different then last year?

This year is different because this will be my last year to run on this team.

Come support the Cross Country team in their next meet!!!  GO CHARGERS!!

SOCCER TEAM WITH A NEW COACH

Posted on 08 September 2009 by Humberto Rosas

Coach Rico Bulaclac

Coach Rico Bulaclac

As we know all fall sports are starting and the new freshmen should get involved. Soccer is one of the sports that is starting. During the last two years the soccer team has struggled  but this year the school actually has a pretty good soccer team because the team has about eighteen players. The whole team was surprised because they won two of their scrimmage games. This year the soccer team got a new coach and this reporter got in contact with him and talked to him about his expectations for the team.

1) HI COACH.  CAN YOU TELL US YOUR NAME AND A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
My name is Rico Bulaclac. I teach eighth grade science, and this is my fifth year at Noe Middle School. I was first introduced to soccer when a parent coach needed a faculty sponsor for the program during my first year at Noe. Ever since, every Noe soccer team of which I had been the head coach has been to the championship game at the end of the season. I hope to continue that streak here at Jeffersontown.

2) HOW DO YOU FEEL BEING THE JEFFERSONTOWN SOCCER TEAM’S COACH?

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with so much talent on this team. I like to win, and Jeffersontown gives me the best opportunity to succeed. Everyone’s expectation for us is so low based on the past three years that I feel we have an opportunity to shock the entire league (and probably the entire student body) by doing really well within such a short turnaround time. Usually, it takes a program at least two to three years to rebuild, but I feel that we can be a great team right away. Why not us? Why not now? We have the ingredients for having a very strong team for at least these next two years with Humberto Rosas being the only senior on the roster.

3) THE SCRIMMAGE GAMES WERE GOOD BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK THE TEAM NEEDS TO WORK ON?
Our front line is superb and will only get better as more returning players get their paperwork completed to join the team as soon as they can. Our only potential weakness may be on the wings of our defense. We have yet to be tested by extremely talented forwards down the sides of the field.

4) THE TEAM DID PRETTY WELL ON THE SCRIMMAGE GAMES, THEY WON 4-1 AGAINST FAIRDALE HIGH AND PRP. HOW DID YOU PREPARE THEM FOR THOSE GAMES  BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING THEY HAVEN’T DONE IN TWO YEARS?

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect because those two scrimmage games were my first experiences coaching a high school soccer team. Most of my summer was spent just trying to find enough players to field a team. I told my players that we could be really good if we could just find enough players to fill our roster. Despite only having one sub for each of those scrimmages, we still defeated each team comfortably even though they had seven to ten times as many bench players as we had. Go figure. We definitely have the raw talent here.

5) HOW DO YOU THINK THEY ARE GOING TO DO THIS THE SEASON?

I don’t want to jinx anything by making a specific prediction, but I will say with confidence that we have a unique opportunity to make one of the greatest one-year turnarounds ever in the history of KHSAA soccer. Going just 1-20 from 2007-2008 and not even fielding a soccer team in 2006, we already doubled our total number of wins in the past three years without having even played a single regular season game.

6) YOU THINK THE SOCCER TEAM IS PREPARED FOR BIG GAMES LIKE CAL, EASTERN AND MALE??
I think as we build more and more confidence after racking up more wins, we could make a legitimate run for the district championship in October. For some reason, Male is the preseason #1 soccer team in the state. Physically, I think we are prepared to compete against a team like Male, but mentally at this point, not quite yet. But we’ll get there.

7) THE TEAM IS HAPPY ABOUT HAVING A NEW COACH. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

Players play better together when they are satisfied about a situation. There was a noticeable change in team morale on the bus ride home from the PRP win (the first 2-game winning streak since 2005). If my team is happy, it just makes my job that much easier.

8) WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET MORE THAN TWELVE PLAYERS ON THE TEAM, BECAUSE LAST YEAR THEY BARELY ENDED THE SEASON WITH NINE PLAYERS?

I definitely give most of the credit to Coach Farman who compiled the list of interest before the summer. Without that list, I probably would not have fielded a team until after the first week of scheduled games. The rest of the credit goes to just being lucky to have players who can network well. We started the first summer practice with only six players, but word of mouth spread like wildfire.

9) HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE CAN YOU ALLOW ON THE TEAM BECAUSE THERE MIGHT BE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO JOIN?

As of today, I am expecting to take five more players who have already spoken to me. This would give us eighteen players on the roster — my “magic” number. I would consider accepting anyone else who is interested in participating, but playing time would understandably be limited.

10) IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY?

I highly encourage the student body to come check out your much-improved varsity boy’s soccer team this season. We have a new look with brand new jerseys, a brand new logo, and a brand new winning attitude. At each home game, you will receive a “Bowl 1 Get 1 Free” coupon courtesy of Kingpin Lanes upon admission. We will especially need your support for the first two district games against KCD and Christian Academy later this month. We look forward to seeing you there!

Coach Bulaclac seems to care a lot about the team because even though this is his first year coaching at J-town, he got new uniforms for the team. He thinks his team is physically ready for big game like Male and Eastern. Good luck to coach Bulaclac and his team. GO CHARGERS.
